The problem is that I had never implemented SSL (secure sockets layer for HTTP) in my networking stack, for use during downloads and updates. I have been using DropBox as my download server, and they recently switched to using SSL exclusively, so that broke my updater.
I’m working on it right now, it may take me a few more weeks. When it’s fixed, I’ll let you know here, then all you have to do is manually update (download and run the installer yourself), and all will be right in the world again!
