Playlists allow you to group songs any way you wish. Playlists are always a subset of your library—that is, all of your songs stay in your library; they aren’t “moved” to your playlists. Think of your playlists as just different ways to slice and dice your tunes. And yes, a single song can appear in as many different playlists as you want.
To create a new playlist:
- Click the New Playlist button (the plus sign in the lower left of your screen) OR use File → New Playlist.
The new playlist appears to the left under Source. - To name a playlist, select the playlist by clicking on it. Then click once more. (Do not double click.) A border will appear around the playlist title, and you can type in a new name.davequestion: Is this correct?
- To add a song to the playlist, drag and drop the song from the library, or use Target Mode if you are adding multiple songs to a playlist.
- To play from a playlist, simply click on the playlist and its contents appear on screen. From here, you play the songs just as you do in the main library.
Cool Things About Playlists
- Each playlist can have its own columns of meta data. For example, your playlist "Show Tunes" might have a column for Composer, while your main Library does not. davequestion: why isn't the default meta data for playlists the same as the main library's?
- To enable drag and drop reordering, make sure you sort your playlists by index (works in all playlists, including Rotation) davequestion: what is "index"?
- When you change the tempo of a song, that change is reflected in all playlists. However, this is a default setting, and kJams will allow you to maintain different tempos in different playlists. (A nice feature if you are setting up a playlist for each singer.) You can find this default option under Edit → Preferences → Advanced. When you deselect this option, any change you make in tempo will be restricted to the playlist you’re in at the time.
Target Mode
Adding multiple songs to a playlist can become tedious if you have to drag each one individually. Target Mode allows you to move multiple songs quickly.
- Double click on the “target” playlist. A little, red target symbol appears.
- Double click (rather than drag) each song title that you want to add to the playlist. The song magically appears in the playlist.
- Double click again on the playlist to exit target mode.
Note: This feature is not yet available on Windows.
