Importing, duplicate handling?

If I accidentally import a folder of songs twice, what happens? Do they show up in the library twice? I'm using references only to an external hard drive, not copying the files to the local kjams folder.

they show up in the library twice. this is a bad situation. if you do "trash original files" on only ONE of the duplicate files, of course the remaining entry will point to nothing, as you have trashed your only copy.

sorry for the necro-post, but Dave, can you export the playlist for some people before rebuilding? A little disappointed I can't remove songs from the DB without destroying all the singers/venues.

You can remove songs from the library using several methods, some of which do NOT delete the file from the drive. I only pointed out how the current situation CAN be dangerous.

if you have a list of the songs you imported, just select all on that list and go "Edit->Remove From Library". More info here.

To answer the other Q: no currently there is no way to preserve playlists when rebuilding.

So I cannot Export all users playlists at a certain venue via CSV unless I go to each one and do them one at a time? Just verifying.

Still trying to find the easiest way to do this change. I made 13,654 changes to my backup files. I have still not changed my production machine.

What if I Re-imported my library again, then removed the missing songs and then cull duplicates? Would that work? I am sure I will alter people's playlists, but it won't kill them completely...and I'll still have all my singers and venues right?

that's not going to do you any good since you can't import them.

definitely not. do NOT re-import your library again. just find the ones you accidentally imported and get rid of them. sort by date added or something. culling duplicates is automated and may not choose the most recently added.

by default, when you add to library, kjams makes a playlist of what got imported. do you have that?

if you're really intent on keeping your library / playlists / singers, then you should throw out your backup, yes with all the work you've done, then re-do that work using kJams. then make a new backup.

Actually, keeping a CSV of favorites IS a big help with my regulars. At least I can add them back in...
I do NOT have a playlist of what was imported and when. I'm going to have to rebuild my entire library. Tossing the changes is not an option. Dave, I am a KJ that plays out 4 nights a week. I have HUNDREDS of regular singers. And as you know I am approaching 300k songs in my database. I've been doing this just about 20 years. I have no way of knowing exactly what changes I've made to my backup. Apparently it will be easier to make a csv of some of my best singers' favorites, and start over for everyone else.

This is by no means a derogatory question, but are you a KJ that plays out?

and by the way, by operating on your "backup", it's no longer a backup, now it's a "fork". forking is a nightmare because you must forever maintain two separate databases.

yes, i'm actually suggesting you just throw out ALL the changes you've made to your backup, and doing it all "the right way" using kjams.
