More unintended consequences - missing files

Just talk about kJams stuff with each other, describe things you did that worked, talk about your setup, anything that doesn't fit into the other forums!

More unintended consequences - missing files

Post by Sedge »

Dave,

question about how to proceed. I got the new mac, moved stuff around, (all this has been discussed/documented here) and I also moved the kJams Music folder (intact) from an external drive onto my new big-harddrive MBPro. The only things that should be in there are 9 cavs scdg disks (about 4,000 songs, I think) - everything else was imported from exisiting files, as my old mac didn't have the ability to rip.

To deal with the imported files, I took everything in my library that wasn't on one of those SCDGs and removed it from the library, then re-added it. The library (database) data regarding the SCDG stuff was never messed with.

Now, I'm getting errors randomly regarding those files in the kJams music folder - just the 'Could Not Find File' error, and the option to go find it, which I can do. The first batch of ~300 songs had about 10 errors in it, but I pulled another 300 song batch to check, and it seems to be happening more frequently.

I really don't want to trash the kJams Music folder and the Library entries that would refer to it, and re-rip those 9 disks. I don't think that running the Import command on the kJams Music folder would be a good idea either!

Not sure what I can or should do here - looking up dozens of files individually is getting tiresome. just checked - about half (127) of my second batch of 300 are affected. It seems they have the hard path to the external drive as their zip file address (/Volumes/SEAGATE/...), instead of a soft path to kJams Music/ - and there's no real reason why some would be one way and others a different - they were all imported at the same time, and so forth.

Problem solved.
Just involved creating a symbolic link, force saving the database, and then removing the symbolic link.

Dave, you're a gentleman and a scholar. 8)

How did you created the symbolic link?
I kind of have the same problem. I moved around some files and suddenly the program could not find the songs. I'm afraid i just lost the work of weeks copying all my library to the program, there have to be some way other than start the process from scratch!

Help, please!

kids: don't do drugs, and don't EVER MOVE FILES out from under kJams. It's like sending the space shuttle up, then when they're coming back, you move the landing strip runway without telling them. What's gonna happen? they'll crash into the desert.

*sigh*.

having said that, you *may* be able to dig yourself out of your self-created hole but ONLY IF you moved a folder. if you moved individual files around, then sorry you WILL have to rebuild from scratch.

If you ONLY moved folders, then you can use the Symlink Trick.
