Moving files cleanly, without confusing kjams library

Post by pietro79 »

Hello,

Just purchased kjams pro, and want to setup and print out a book

I will be using an external hard drive to store / play off of

I've read through all the documentation, hoping most of it sunk in

I was reading the "Defaulting to external HD" post, and I think I understand how kjams manages files, but I want to make sure before adding to my library, to avoid making a mess

Please correct me if I'm wrong:
--------
with my hard drive on, I drag the files I want over to the kjams library

it'll give me the "Warning: When you use 'Add to Library...', kjams..." message, and I click "I Know"

now, kjams is only pointing to the actual cdg/mp3's, and in other words does not copy the files into its own music folder, like say iTunes does

my hard drive must obviously be On for kjams to play these cdg/mp3's to which it points

my hard drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which works with Kjams
-------

In several places, Dave says that after "adding to library", one must never ever ever move the files or change the file names of those files to which kjams is pointing

BUT, say I do want to move them... can I just delete those "pointers" in the kjams library, move the actual files, and then re- "add to library" them (ie-drag them in again)?

Or will the world explode? And if so, is there karaoke in heaven?

But really, if deleting, moving, and re-adding doesn't work, how do I move files cleanly, with no problems?

Thank you sincerely,
Pietro

That is exactly correct! This is currently the "supported" way of doing it. I'm (still) working on a "file paths" feature you'll be able to use in the future to re-point without this delete/move/re-add rigamarole, so one day it'll be built in. Another alternative available now is you can use symbolic links at the old location/path to point to the new location/path. A symbolic link is like an Alias, only more so.

great, thanks!

I'm very excited to get this going

What a well designed program Dave! It really follows clear logic, which I find very satisfying.

And once you get that "multiple songs per rotation" worked out, I will buy you dinner next time you're in Montreal :D
