Setting up show

Post by gbrad »

I am doing a show in a couple of weeks. There will be a mix of Karaoke and regular music. I wanted to start a new venue and drag the songs I want like you can with the singers. That doesn't happen. I want to start with some background music, then a little karaoke then other music, karaoke, etc. That way I can leave the system for several minutes and the show continues. Is that not possible? Am I going at it the wrong way?
Thanks again for all your help.

That's exactly how my shows run, but I don't use kJams to run the regular music. Over time, I've used a combination of iTunes, my iPod plugged in to the board, and other software (djay) to run the live music.

There's wiki and board info about a crossfading script that should work with iTunes. I've never tried it. I've just gotten used to sloppy crossfades unless you have a mixing board and at least two channels of music (I use a channel for my iPod, the headphone jack from dJay to another channel for my main music, and a USB audio to a third channel for kJams) - and I can crossfade all day long, smoothly, although it helps to fade to background music on the iPod in between kJams and djay (and back) so I'm not flipping through screens on the Mac to play/pause.

Getting it smooth will take practice, but you've probably got enough tools to start. kJams+iTunes over a single channel (headphone jack to board) isn't the easiest, but it can be done.

I wouldn't recommend using kJams to also run your regular music tracks - eventually it will be able to, but for now, there'd be way more confusion than it's worth regarding rotation, or a separate venue like you're thinking, and switching back and forth. Even just switching venues back and forth is a little rough, and will certainly leave you some dead air that doesn't need to be there.

Thanks for the reply. I am new at this, so alot of what you are suggesting is not clear. So I can understand, what I am trying to do is not possible with Kjams? I cannot create a venue and drag all the songs I want to use, regardless of format, into that venue and place them in the play order. I need to have multiple pieces of equipment to play everything I need.
Thanks for patience.

I think when you say "venue" you mean "playlist". A venue is a physical location the KJ goes to where singers exist. the KJ brings ALL their music to the venue, and makes playlists for what to play there.

You don't create separate venues just to hold different sets of songs, you use playlists for that. and yes, kJams can do that just fine. And you can use iTunes to hold your "regular" music and use the crossfade script to do the lovely fading back and forth.
