Backup HD for several venues

Post by Karanight »

What's the best way to keep different HD's the same for kJams.
I want to be able to take a laptop to a venue that normally has it's own permanent Mini Mac there and then use the laptop and the HD thats already there. I'll want to do this if the Mini Mac packs in for any reason. Also the same could happen with the HD, I might need to bring another HD to replace one thats broken. Obviously the venue will have it's own library of singers and I make sure the library is saved on the HD from time to time, so I could plug the Laptop in to the HD, transfer the library to the laptop, and I could then run the show from the laptop. I'm having a problem getting my head around the way I need to backup the HD's. I could create a backup for each venue, but that seems expensive.

Also If I get a new CDG, put it on the HD and add it to a library and then do the same with another HD using my laptop will kJams read from either HD if I need to swap computers
I realize that each HD would need to be mirrored first, before I add any new CD's and I also realize I would need to add to the library in the same order for each HD
I'm also using the same make and size of HD Lacie 1tb with firewire.

follow the directions for "music plus all library settings"
http://karaoke.kjams.com/wiki/Moving
set up all the computers to work this way, so you can exchange either a computer or a hard drive or both, and everything will "just work".

but when you rip new discs or purchase from the music store, you'll want to do the "cloning" part.

it's an error prone process to attempt to keep 2 libraries in sync, that's why i recommend a straight clone to keep a running backup.

I've decided to only have songs in the kJams library that've been sung, so I cloned the HD from the oldest venue I have, and also copied the Music folder for kJams, I then put the music folder on my laptop and opened kJams with the newly cloned HD attached. Then I deleted every song thats never been sung. Now kJams runs very fast when searching and the DJ and singer are not overwhelmed with a huge choice of songs when searching is complete.
Now when I get new tracks I only need to update the HD's via cloning, and not the kJams library which will be easier.
If a singer wants a song thats never been sung it's normally, click cmd/o click in the search bar and type the song in, choose a track and its done. But I've created a Quickeys shortcut so when I click cmd/o the HD is chosen for me, and the folder that contains the karaoke tracks is chosen, and even the search bar is clicked into, all I need to do is type the name of the song and a reference like SF if the singer specifies a version.
I've got "Auto-play when adding single song to Library" unchecked.
I know it's not perfect but I think I, the DJ's that work for me and the singers will like the more simplistic library.
I haven't put the results back on the venues computer yet, I'm looking for feedback on here before I do.
My only concern is, when a singer goes to another venue they might ask for a song they've sung at their normal venue and then be given a different version. But that happens anyway.
