1 year stats

Post by jfbiii »

Some rough analysis of kJams data for the first 13 months that I've used it. The numbers aren't precise--a few things have disappeared or not been counted for one reason or another--but they're not off by very much:

The top 12% of singers put up 65% of the songs
The top 25% of singers put up 80% of the songs
The top 50% of singers put up 92% of the songs

Over the course of 13 months people have sung about 950 unique songs in 2978 turns, or roughly 25% of the total uniques in my catalog.

I've managed to sing 148 unique songs in 303 turns. [Did I mention I do karaoke because _I_ like to do karaoke? :) ]

Top 30 songs at my venues:

Picture
Total Eclipse Of The Heart
What A Wonderful World
Lady Marmalade
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Say It Isn't So
Folsom Prison Blues
Johnny B. Goode
Short skirt long jacket
Santeria
Ring Of Fire
Imagine
Bohemian Rhapsody
Under The Bridge
Summer Nights
Because I Got High
Slide
Hotel California
Criminal
Crazy
Can't Stop
Baby Got Back
99 Problems
Basket Case
Walking After Midnight
The Bad Touch
Love Shack
Like a Virgin
I Want You To Want Me
I Touch Myself

That's a good list. And some really high numbers! I mean, I hate "Picture," the song at the top of my list and it's only been done 31 times since I got kJams. I can't imagine having to hear something 136 times in 18 months. Ouch! And there's stuff on your list that I've never heard of, either. Bjork? at karaoke? I'm not positive, but that may never have been attempted in the entire state of Mississippi. I may have to make it a personal goal to do a Bjork song.

I always suspected the 80/20 rule would hold up if I kept track of it (I ran off of discs for the first 4 years I did karaoke). What surprised me is that the to 10% singers are singing so much more than everyone else.

There are now only 3 songs in my top 30 that only one person sings. What A Wonderful World, Lady Marmalade, and Short Skirt Long Jacket. Each one by a different singer.

I'm curious about what the stats will look like in another year. I've only done about 65 shows since I got kJams, because I mostly only do 1 show a week. Although I've been much more receptive to extra shows this year so far. Even though the economy hasn't really affected my paycheck, it seems a lot dumber now to turn down gigs than it did last year. Anyway, 65 shows still seems like a small sample, even though they're over an entire year.

Cheers!

The Bjork song is done by quite a lot of singers. Must be a British thing
Valerie thats been done 136 times is done almost every single night, and yes it gets a bit much

Wow! My little company runs 23 shows a week here, with up to 6 shows a night going on. I'm the only one of my guys using a mac, but I do see the top songs from other systems... JFbill, your list contains many of my top songs, but Karaknight, lol... Not only has no one sung 99% of those songs, I've never even heard of many of them...

Definitely must be a british thing!

Very interesting to see what another country's own little annoyance songs are.. eg: Kid Rock - Picture

I've just started running kjams again, as I've built several new dual boot mac/PC mac Mini systems for my company.

I'm hoping to be up and runningwith the server tonight at my show...

It's hard.. I'm used to a certain PC software, and I've been perfect;y happy with it for 8 years, but I'm really going to make a concerted effort to dive in head first with kjams this time.

Got me wondering now, what's the 1% you have heard of. With all the hype I hear in the news I thought our charts in the UK was similar to the US charts, it just goes to show, the media knows nothing.

Hi!

I've heard of most of them, but there are a few that make me go "huh?" I've been a Full time DJ for 14 years (I'm 35) and I know some real obscure stuff. However, there are many tracks you'd just never DJ with, and if someone didn't sing it, you'd probably never hear it.. That's part of why I enjoy running karaoke.. it teaches me new music.. Everyone has their favorites, and it may not be from the mainstream, so every night I say "Hey that's a great song" and really mean it, because I may not have known the artist, or possibly might have never even heard it before..

For example.. Amy Winehouse - Valerie... I've never heard it... Sweet About Me By Gabriella Cilmi... can't even find it...

It's not that your top songs are bad, it's that they're not the Top tracks I'd think would be sung for those artists...

You've got some real deep tracks in there..

You know though, Here in the states, music is so homogenized that many kids under 25 don't even know influential artists like the clash, culture club, Depeche mode, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Yes, The Cure, etc.. You know.. stuff we grew up on...

If it's not one of the 12 songs they play over and over on the radio hour after hour, the kids don't know it..

I think the decline in Album sales also cripples the kid's musical knowledge.. They buy one track at a time off of itunes.. I have over 800 CD's, and i can pretty much sing along from front to back on most of them.. We got full albums, and listened to the good songs, and the bad songs as well.. we knew the whole thing.... Even if we didn't like the album, at least we could recognize the songs...

Hell, I know more hannah Montana than my daughter does, because she only hears 6 different tunes on the disney channel.. lol.

I have however got hooked on Floyd... Started her with Dark side, and now she's worked on up to the Final Cut.

I'm proud of her..

As for the charts, I'm here in Atlanta georgia.. We are the Hip Hop Capital of the south.. I'm not a huge fan, but it's inescapable... I know kids who don't listen to any rock at all.. their entire breadth of musical knowledge encompasses only Rap... sad..

Anyhow, I guess my point was that there is no emphasis on preserving good music here in the states.. I think the fact that people are singing those songs at your show is a good thing. It shows that someone still has taste..

Here, some of my top tracks are:

I Love Rock & Roll
Picture
You Never Even call Me By My Name
Ice Ice Baby
Forgot about Dre
BadFish
Before He Cheats
Landslide
F#@k Her Gently
Crazy Bitch

Every damn show someone sings one or more of them...

I do however believe that Paradise by the dashboard Light is indeed a global problem! lol

Holy Crap! Image

Wow. In my whole town I can probably count about 12 shows a week. I agree on most of your comments about kids and music. For all that we were supposed to be freed from the crap because we tech was going to let us break the chains of a few providers force feeding it to us, a lot of people have just traded one source of crap for another. I do think, though, that the people in my rotation the most, the 12% with 65% of the songs, have a much more eclectic taste than the other 88%.

I wish I'd never heard of Valerie--Amy Winehouse and it'll not be long before I get fed of hearing Sweet About Me.
I Suppose I'm lucky with the overall variety of songs sung but we do get our fair share of songs that are hammered to death.

Keep up the good work with your daughter with introducing her to the classics. I think that most mature DJ's/KJ's will have a varied taste of music and even some younger one do, that's why they choose the do the job. But there are some over here that haven't got a clue what music is!

I know just 5 of the tracks that Steve Lynch listed so that's 5 I've never heard of. I've listened to those I've never heard of on YouTube and I might even try some oh them. And yes your right about Paradise By The Dashboard. Enough's enough.
