VCD format vs the all popular CDG
VCD format vs the all popular CDG
Hi gang, just wanted to start a discussion on these formats. I hope this is okay to post. I'm really enjoying Kjams and wanted to know peoples opinion. It seems to me that VCD is far superior to CDG. I like the video background and the audio quality seems much more closer to the original tracks. Is it just me? Why is the industry going to CDG? Just to keep up from copying? The graphics or bits seem so primitive. Yikes .
:)
Yes VCD is IMHO much better, but better than that is DVD of course. kJams will be supporting BOTH formats and you'll be able to use kJams to rip mix and burn both VCD and DVD type discs (in fact you could then rip CDG and burn DVD, not that you'd want to)
hmm, with the video mixer you could then put a lovely video behind the CDG graphics, and THEN burn to dvd.... hmmmmm.... *musing on the possibilities*

I love the 80's
I'm fairly new to karaoke to be honest, and haven't tried VCD or DVD, but I have to say that CDG's bitmapped graphics are what give it some of it's charm in my opinion. I'm sure video backgrounds would be nice, but I just wonder if it would be a different experience or distracting. What have your opinions been when trying out VCD or DVD for the first time?
:)
VCD and DVD, with the video in the background, is much the same as LaserDisc, if done well it is not distracting at all, and kindof fun. By "done well" i mean the text has to be visible on any and all backgrounds, even changing backgrounds, which usually means an outline around the text.
i'll have to do some fancy shenanegans to compose the CDG text with background video, in order to introduce a fat outline around it. mmmm fun!

Yeah, but what i don't understand is, Why would CDG have most of the market when other formats are far superior, i'm talking about sound. Yeah, the video is a bonus too. I have not heard much talk about this. Have not been able to find any discussion about iton google. The whole thing just bugs me!!
really?
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
Is the sound on DVD karaoke really superior? Do they Dolby encode the music? I kind of doubt that you'd get a karaoke DVD with anything more than stereo sound, which is what you get from a CDG disk, but maybe you do. Again, I haven't played with any DVD karaoke.

DVD's do not have superior sound to CDs, unless you're using a computer to analyze the audio. CDs encode at 44k and yes i believe (could be wrong) that DVD's encode at 48k, but frankly this is imperceptible to normal humans (those with Golden Ears excepted). Also, DVD's can be encoded with multichannel audio, but 99% of DVD karaoke does NOT take advantage of it due to the insane cost of multichannel engineering. Not to mention that most venues are NOT set up as sound stages. So i'm not sure how it can bug you, except "on principal", and in that case I agree with you
FWIIW I have never liked video backgrounds on Karaoke discs. Thus I have never bought any. Those that I have seen all look a bit naff. I know that it is a matter of taste but I would never use them.
On VCD and DVD can the video be turned off leaving a text on plain background like you get with CD+G?

No, as far as i know the video cannot be turned off with VCD. DVD, i am not familiar with. What i mean when i say VCD is a better sound, im talking about the music, not the 44k vs 48 k, but the realism of the music. It just sounds more like band music. Listening to everyone here is making me think i may just have a great VCD player and a crappy CDG player
Or maybe i can just concentrate better when a hot chick is walking across my screen
Not to mention that VCD's are much easier to back up. But i have to say, i am getting used to CDG's. Cheers
The quality of karaoke backing vary enormously. I don't think it is related to the format, more it is related to the label.Brendan wrote:im talking about the music, not the 44k vs 48 k, but the realism of the music.
You can get six versions of My Way and each would sound very different from the others. Some may have been done with a full orchestra and others will be done on a cheapo MIDI keyboard. Some may be very true to the original, others may add a chorus or two. Some will have decent backing singers on, others will have roped in half a dozen blokes from the local pub.
It may be that you have been lucky in the VCDs that you have bought and less lucky with your CDGs.

I see what you're saying. Yes i've got some Led Zeppelin CDGs that are so true to the original you'd think it was Led Zeppelin performing. I mean whoever they got to re-create the song was *really* into Led Zeppelin, they totally pulled off their amazing sound. And it was on a CD+G disc.
