Legally recording and selling CD's

Post by gbrad »

I know when I puchase Karaoke music, I have the right to play it, but what if I want to record some CD's and sell them. I'm not talking world wide distribution. But if you sell one illegally you could be toast. That also begs the question about using Karaoke to make money KJ'ing at a bar or a reunion or wedding. What do you who do that do as far as getting paid?
Does anyone know who I can contact to get liscense to record and sell from the Karaoke music I have purchased?
Thanks in advance for any help and guidance.

you can not sell music that you've bought, except if you've bought the original CD and you sell that physical original CD, without keeping a copy for yourself. this is just common sense.

this also means you can't sell a recording of the singer along with the audio of the song. you can sell the singer the recording of ONLY their vocal track, and then the singer can purchase the audio track from the manufacturer to compose them together. I suppose that means that you could re-purchase the song on the singer's behalf and resell it to them, but you can't keep a copy for yourself, but i suppose you must already have a copy in the first place.

when you work at a bar, the bar owner is supposed to have arranged the licensing fees on your behalf, such that you can play in public the songs in your collection.
