Minimum network speed for Chartbuster streaming

Post by gsteffens »

What is the minimum network speed needed to have an stable experience with streaming? I am wondering if something like a Verizon WiFi card or a tethered Blackberry could provide enough bandwidth to ensure a smooth experience. Thoughts or any testing done yet?

currently, kjams caches the entire song before it starts playing, so it's up to you to decide if it's fast enough. (ie: any network speed will do, but must download the whole thing before starting)

i'll soon be adding a feature to pre-cache the song while kjams is playing the previous song, so the next song can start instantly.

I finally got the chance to test out a tethered connection on my Blackberry and it took about 90 seconds to download the song into cache and start playing. Not ideal but it works and the pre-caching enhancement would definitely help as it could download the next song before the current song is finished playing.

I was wondering because we were trying the streaming and it seemed to just stop..so I guess if a song is like 3 or 4 minutes, it will be that long before it actually begins to play once we click on the stream it link?

no, if it stops, that's a bug. the "stream cache" part will run as fast as your network can go. eg: on "normal" broadband speed (even DSL), you'll get the stream in less than ten seconds. mine i get it in 3 seconds, but i'm above average. if you're on dialup, it will indeed suck for now. pre-caching will fix this for most people.

update: it was just a network problem, which is now fixed (sometimes just rebooting your router does wonders).

also: the pre-cache feature will be in the next release (with a pref to turn it off if it behaves wonky)
