Hi!
Newly registered user. Haven't yet tried anything with kJams yet; was simply reading up on stuff to learn about the software. Would love some info on what the pros and cons are for the various audio encoders available for importing, and how to make an informed choice. I realize that space will become an issue for uncompressed importing, as in Scott's case, and I also read somewhere that QTV, LAME, and OV are the three that retain metadata. Yet, why would one select QTV over LAME or OV or MP4 or AIFF? Any link to pertinent info that you can post would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Audio Codec Help?
FYI, please don't tack on to the end of an unrelated topic. If you have a new subject, create a new topic.
It depends on your needs. if you have golden ears and can hear the differences in compression, you may be bothered by compressed audio, in which case you want to use Apple Lossless. but 99% of the population can't tell the difference (i can't) so we compress our audio. the "most compatible" compression format is MP3. the "new fangled" format is AAC, the "open source" format is OGG/Vorbis. Any that don't retain meta data will get a sidecar file.

Thank you for your prompt response. I apologize for posting my query in follow up to an importing post that I had been reading. I did not realize that my question was a separate technical topic; I had simply been thinking about it as an importing question.
So, no golden ears here, and I am sure I can live with compressed audio. Yet, I don't understand why QTV is the default under the Importing tab since you say LAME is the most compatible (and available through your website as a kJams add-on) and AAC is the newest. I guess my question is should I stay with the default settings and QTV, or should I choose LAME for a standard MP3 import? I am simply planning to import once from a bunch of CDGs I have and then run the music from a PowerBook at family gatherings. I will value your input in making this choice.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Audio Codec Help?
MP3 is not included with kJams because i can't legally sell it or even include it. you may choose download the plugin and install it yourself if you wish.
yes, AAC should be the "default" but i just haven't got around to setting it that way. sorry my bad.
i can't recommend what you should do, but if it were me, i'd use MP3.

Thank you! Just what I needed. A nod from the master! MP3 it is then.

Re: Audio Codec Help?
Just as a side note (for which I will not start a new topic, so there!)
I am one of those people who CAN hear compression artifacts, and I really HATE MP3s in general. That said, they are usually either high pitched clipping artifacts or low end rumble, and in the context of a standard, loud, acoustically sub-optimal bar, running through an EQ, they are NOT an issue. As such, if cross platform compatibility is an issue, I'd say stick with MP3s, or if size is an issue, use AAC. AAC sound much better, BTW.
