Laptop PC spec to run kJams for Windows

Post by KJ-G »

Hi All,

I had a bad crash at a gig on Saturday night. This has highlighted my exposure to hardware faults and it's time to consider a complete backup system as a matter of urgency.

Dave's close to releasing kJams for Windows, so it looks like a really reliable laptop PC might make a more cost-effective alternative as a backup machine.

Can anyone please recommend a spec and brand that will do the trick and be reliable for running kJams and some DJing software for filler music?

Another issue is that I have a large collection of songs ripped as zipped Apple Lossless files. Is there a practicable way to convert these to mp3s for the backup system?

Thanks in advance

- G

i would not expect kJams for Windows to be as solid (same frequency of bugs) as for Mac. if i were you i'd get another mac.

you can convert to mp3 using kJams. set mp3 as your encoder (install LAME if necessary) then select your songs and go "special->convert to mp3"
note this will COPY your songs to your kJams library folder. if you want it to happen in place (eg: on your external drive) then you need to set a secret pref.

Thanks for the advice, Dave. I'm still deciding what to do hardware wise.

If possible to do so, can the files be copied and converted to another drive altogether e.g. a blank one, whilst leaving the existing Apple Lossless files in place on the original drive? I had a really bad experience converting in place when I went from wav to Apple Lossless.

Thanks,
- G

yes, just set your "kjams music" folder to the new drive, the do the conversions, they'll all be copied as they convert, originals left untouched.
