Super CDG Ripping Problems

Post by misfit550 »

Well, after spending an entire weekend experimenting with PC trial programs, I was ready to throw it across the room. I honestly tried every program available, and nothing would rip regular CDG's without "artifacts" on the graphics. My fiance (who is a PC hater), said "Well... you should try it on my Mac!" I instantly came across kJams, downloaded the trial, and was shocked to see that it would rip... and the files worked perfectly. I immediately bought the Pro version, and stayed up WAY too late on a work night ripping discs. We're very excited at the prospect of having a karaoke party where we don't have to screw around with the discs.

Then came the bummer.

I stumbled across some Super CD+G discs on eBay last week. They're the Chartbuster Essential 450 series. I was nervous about whether they would work with kJams, but the features said they should be compatible. I did come across the forum listing regarding problems with these same discs, but Dave's response was that they were just bad copies. Today, I got them in the mail. I was pleasantly surprised when I popped one in, and kJams immediately opened it. The best part... all of the track info was already filled out (even though I had the database lookup turned off). I was super excited, selected all tracks, and let 'er rip. 4 songs in, it crashed (just like what happened with the other guy). I got an error message stating something about "looking for a file, got a folder" (or possibly the other way around). The discs seem to play okay... except for a very slight lag in the graphics. I did notice the ripping time per track was insanely fast compared to ripping a regular CDG.

Any ideas? The discs appear to be legit. You can feel good knowing that these same discs are SUPPOSED to be PC compatible, and mine won't even open them. :)

Follow up:

Just tried the Super CDG disks in my DVD ROM drive at work, and they work great. The included player comes up and they play flawlessly. I'm wondering if it's partly a drive problem... it just seems strange that the Mac at home reads them pretty well... but won't rip them.

Hey Dave, thanks for the response! All those great reviews floating around about you are obviously true. :)

I just downloaded kJams about 3 days ago. I've got Pro version 1.0d50r56 (tried update, says no new version is available.)

Not sure how to find information about this Mac, it's a new thing for me. I do know it's almost exactly two years old.

Geez, that show is still on? :)

Apparently I have zero iChat skills. It still says that you're offline, and it's waiting for your authorization.

Well, Dave showed me how to somewhat get around this problem... even though I apparently have some funky discs. Awesome. :) If you find discs on eBay that seem to be too cheap to be true... they probably are.

Hey Dave,
I took that SCDG to work, and the files copied over fine there. I put them on an external drive, and then copied them into the Mac... with no problems. I want to try ripping from the folder again, but I'm not sure how you made that "ghost" disc (or whatever it's called). I'm hoping to catch you online again.
