Power Cut

Post by Karanight »

I was at a gig tonight using an external drive for the music with my laptop and the power went off whilst someone was singing, I also had Automator, iTunes and Stickies running in the background. When the power came back I couldn't get the external drive to appear on the desktop so, as I wasn't far from home I went home to get a backup HD. When I connected the backup kJams crashed several times. Up till the Backup HD being connected I've not had any crashing problems. The HD I had when the power went off was connected through the 800 firewire and the backup HD got connected the same way.
Could the power cut have damage the first HD and also could it have damaged the firewire connection point
Also I noticed when I booted up when I got home after the gig to do this message there was no start up chimes. I then turned the laptop off again and back on and the startup chimes chimed.

When I connected the backup kJams crashed several times
this is like saying "when i lit a match the house burned down". you're leaving out some rather important information (like holding the match up to the curtains)

when did it crash? the instant the firewire cable touched the computer? as soon as the drive mounted? after quitting and re-running kJams? in the middle of a song? while doing a search? while ripping a disc?

was it a crash or a hang? did the whole computer crash or just kJams? did it crash in the exact same place each time? did you send the crash report?

it's unlikely a power cut could cause these symptoms but it's not impossible.

The crashing wasn't an issue till the power damaged my HD
The crashing happened when searching for tracks and when the track couldn't be found so the firewire was already connected.
And yes it wasn't a crash, it was a hang
I only had kjams open after the power cut
I've now sent the report (didn't do it straight away because I was due in hospital and I sent the first forum message in a hurry)

Hope this helps

Can't answer that till I do another gig this weekend
I'm finding that the mirror drive I'm using is not a good mirror so I'll repair it, try it at weekend and then let you know

Whilst I'm trying to rebuild my HD I'm suffering a lot of hangs, some of which the force quit window tells me kJams is not responding and some without the message
Some tracks are not found so I get the message Find or Cancel. If I click Find Kjams hangs,
if I click Cancel I can try to re-attatch the track to the file, kJams hangs (very rare this works)
If I click show original kJams sometimes does it, other times it hangs.
I can then go to the original double click it and the track gets put back into the Library and that track then works, Most of the time
Also when I force quit sometimes I get the message to report to Apple and sometimes not.
I've not had any messages on screen to report the problem to you
If the Power cut caused some of these problems could just re-download kJams to repair it.

All the tracks I've re-put into the library don't cause any hangs when played (not yet at any rate)

Again no problems with kJams, but something happened with the laptop that others might like knowing.
After the power cut I bought a UPS and used that to power the HD, (talk about shutting the door after the horse has bolted)
I've got a power lead that plus into the UPS that I can plug normal plugs into.
Last night I plugged my laptop into this.
Twice in the first 15 minutes the laptop screen went blank and only came after a short while of me pressing the power button on the laptop. when the screen was blank I had no output from the laptop.
Then I realized that the only thing I'd done differently was to plug it into the power via the USP.
I unplugged it and plugged it into the normal power supply and had now further problems.

Kara, it doesn't sound like you're properly rebuilding your library. the forums probably isn't the best place to get this sorted out, we really should just get on the phone and solve this once and for all. are you available tuesday evening?

Before we get on the phone together I thought I'd let you know some of what happened.

1) I backed up HD 1 to HD 2.

2) I connected HD 1 to the laptop.

3) I created a singers file called Vocal.

4) I renamed tracks that had the word Vocal after the artist name and put the word after the song name as well as other renames.

5) Then I had a power cut before I'd backed up the work.

6) I connected HD 2 to the laptop and the tracks I'd renamed wouldn't play (none of them).

7) I deleted the renamed tracks and then re-added them to Library.

They now play
kJams is stored on the laptop
The tracks are stored on the HD
I tried to re-link the tracks but kJams hung, and anyway for this exercise it was quicker to delete them and re-add them

Also on the forum I said I double clicked the track from the HD to put it in the library.
The reason I did that was, at a gig when an odd track won't play because it can't be found, it was quicker and I didn't want to risk kJams hanging.

PS I might not be able to answer the forum for a few days

yes we need to talk

step 6 should have been "copy hd1 to hd2 again"

you had changed the database and many of the files of HD1, then expected it to work with HD2, which was older. you can't do that.
