"Show Template" submenu

Is kJams missing a feature you need? Post it here! Note: if iTunes has it but kJams doesn't, it's a good bet kJams will have it, but that I just haven't gotten around to it yet. But go ahead and request it anyway!

"Show Template" submenu

Post by DeusExMachina »

OK Dave, just to make our private conversations more "official," I hereby post this official feature request (so others can hopefully chime in with support and bump this up in the pile (hint hint):

Instead of the specific "Show Rotation" item in the Video menu, change it to "Show Template Screen" or "Show User Template" or some such. This submenu would be populated by templates which reside in the same folder as the rotation screen, currently ~/Library/Preferences/kJams/Producer Templates (technically this really should be ~/Library/Application Support/kJams, according to Apple, but I'll live. To make this even more user friendly, This might also be a user selectable path, or put in the same directory at playlists and singer .xml files)
Anyway, this will allow the user to create any screen they want, just about, with the Producer plug-in, and then throw it up on screen any time they want. They could even throw it up while a singer was singing, say during one of those 112 measure instrumental breaks, without interfering with the song.
This would allow many things simultaneously. It would allow a user (sorry, I hate the term "KJ") to put up sponsor screens (to maybe supplement their meager income) send humerous or not so much so messages to the audience, or the current singer, advertise drink specials (a big selling point for users in getting jobs, keeping their current job, etc.) break up those often awkward, uncomfortably long instrumental breaks, display local sports logos, announce upcoming events (kamikaze, or karaoke contests) or many other fun things the user's heart might desire (all with the kJams logo, of course! ;) .) You could even use it to show the occasional rotation screen!
If these templates could include video elements, even better!

I know some of these features are already planned, and this would provide a quick, easy method of incorporating them, as well as an elegant, simple interface. It would also increase people's exposure to the Producer plug-in, and might generate a few extra sales.

You could even add an "Instant Template…" (Kamikaze Template?) item that would use a user editable basic template with a user definable editable field. Selecting this menu item would bring up a dialogue box that would allow text entry. Enter text and it would be assigned to the variable text field in the "Instant Template" and displayed as usual. VOILA! Instant realtime messaging for the show MC. Show them the latest score for the local football game, show some karaoke related trivia, announce a set of lost keys. Whatever you want.

Dave and I have already talked about this, Dave would say ad nauseam, but now I'd like other to chime in and perhaps ad to the chorus of how amazing this would be, and how great it would be for this idea to be bumped up a few slots in the development queue.

To The Top, Baby, To The Top!!!

The Importance of Being Ernest

VERY nice. Just about what I was imagining, minus the submenu interface.
I have already thought of a large number of uses. I'll hammer at it as always, as the unofficial bug-tracker, and give you reports.
In the time being, let's hear it from others about what you think about this!

Love this new feature
I used to put stickies on the screen to announce a taxi had arrived.
When the Text announcement is made on kjams could it be on the screen a little longer
Also if I use producer can I change the message on "shanti"

Feature request:

for the new "messenger feauture..." I've disabled "show messages in video", so the messages don't show up in the video-windows...

Could it show also if "show messages..." is disabled?

Text announcement ... be on the screen a little longer
and
Could it show also if "show messages..." is disabled?
both fixed in next release
if I use producer can I change the message on "shanti"
you can edit and/or create any type of static screen you want with Producer yes. "shanti" is not *supposed* to be there, actually i'll be cleaning that all up and making some real "sample" templates.

Another idea about how you can implement things with this feature is to use the templates and messenger together. At least until such time as the "dynamic template text" gets implemented, you can make a template with a blank section at the bottom, designed to draw attention to the messenger text. First show the template, then show your messenger text. It will not appear at this point (possible change would be to allow messenger text to over write template screens?) It will still be there however. Now toggle the template screen and the scrolling text will fade in as the template fades out.
Voila, instant dynamic, customizable message!
If the message is short, you may need to add some padding to get it long enough to scroll, so that it stays around long enough, or just repeat the message multiple times on the same line

Is it possible

Is it possible to have the properties of the messenger text be user editable, things like typeface, font size, duration, etc.?

i've implemented the "dynamic template text" (Video->Screen Message).

currently you can't edit the messenger text attributes. but you can edit the screen messages to your heart's content. :)
