Mac Intel Rosetta

Post by BobFox »

I picked up a new MacWorkBookPro intending to use if for kJams. Won't kJams work seemlessly via Rosetta? If not, is there an estimated release date for the UniversalBinary version?

Meanwhile, can I copy my CD+Gs to a hard drive and import the contents of the drive to kJams' UniversalBinary version when available?

Universal Binary

Post by dave »

Unfortunately, kJams is NOT compatible with Rosetta :(

Good news is, however, I have spent some weeks transferring my development environment to XCode, and I am now able to compile and run! When I actually have time, it may now take me only a couple full days to turn out the Universal Binary version.

However, I have several prior commitments that push out my development work to more than a month from now. I will pick up from where i am some time near the end of may, and I expect to have the Universal Binary released sometime in June. As with all "forward looking" statements, this is subject to change due to unforseen crazyness in my life.

Meanwhile, yes, most certainly you can start ripping now on a PPC mac and transfer your library to your intel mac. When that happens, you'll have to get a new registration from me, just write to me and explain your story and I'll send you one.

Isn't Rosetta supposed to run all PPC apps? What doesn't it like about kJams?

almost there, but not enough

I tried very very hard to make kJams be endian-neutral. Unfortunately, without hardware to test against along the way, I didn't get it right. At this point, it's easier for me to focus on getting a universal binary than just fix the endian issue. (kJams uses uncompressed PCM files for it's internal representation of audio and the cache, which has a specific endian-ness, the endian switch on intel is not properly accounted for)

Macbook Pro woe

Post by LittleRobotMan »

Hi Dave,

I'm trying to get my dad set up with KJams and a mac. Having tried to get him to wait for Apple to release the intel iBook, yesterday he agreed that going the extra distance for a 15" Macbook Pro was justified (and because he's chomping at the bit with the idea of KJams).

I'm sure you can guess what I'm going to ask next ...is the June release of an Intel friendly version happening? - from within any current fog of craziness surrounding your life?

As British as he might be, I think the irony of him waiting and finally upping spec. only to find his app. won't actually work, isn't going to have him laughing like a drain at any point soon.

All that aside, good work with the bug fixes and what I'd value most is a realistic date from you (as far as you are able to give one). In the meantime I'm thinking I may have to feed him my own powerbook - he should be able to transfer the library off of that 'wholesale' at such a time as the Intel version becomes viable (right?).

All the best,

LRM

rosetta is right out. no point in wasing time making it Rosetta compatible when I could spend the same time making it Intel native.

Timeline: same as before, ie: no firm date. Having said that, you may like to know that I've got it now compiling and running on Intel and am now debugging the endian issues. It may be a couple weeks before that's done.

Another monkey wrench in this saga is that our favorite shareware manager eSellerate has decided NOT to release an Intel version of the library that I use. They are forcing me to use a new "embedded web store" library. So even if the Intel version were ready *today* I couldn't release it, until I spend the time to learn their whole gard darn new way of doing thing and implement a custom template web store and test all that too, and THAT could take a couple weeks by itself.
