Cable problem

I have a VocoPro Champion-rec that I use for karaoke twice a month.

The last time I used it, I set it up the way I always do, but no sound came out.

I tried playing with various things and finally replaced the 50' cables that I use to connect the amp with the speakers with real short cables that I use when the pieces are stacked together.

That fixed the problem. But what changed? Replacing even one cable with the longer cables silenced the system. What should I look at?
