Rough Night

Feel free to post bug reports here. I need exact, detailed steps showing me how I can re-create the bug on my machine, so give as much info and detail as possible.

Rough Night

Post by jfbiii »

OK, I had an outright honest to goodness crash during the show. I went to tricerasoft, right clicked "add to singer" and chose an existing singer, then clicked yes to purchase the song. It killed during the download. Just up and died...belly up...got the notice about "kJams seems to have quit unexpectedly" and everything.

Restarted, restarted the song, downloaded the song from the email link, put it in the kJams music folder, then selected "add to library." Never got a dialog, it froze the video, played out the audio (dude knew the song so the video ended up not killing that song). However, when the song was done, I couldn't do anything at all in kJams. Similar to what happens when I first select the venue in the left sidebar...it has to finish whatever it's doing before I can do anything else. So when the song ended and it was still frozen, I forced quit.

Restarted, started the next song in the rotation, found the downloaded song and drug it to the library. Got another freeze. this time the video and audio were unaffected, but I couldn't do anything else. When the song ended and I couldn't start the next song, I forced quit.

Decided not to try to add this song anymore, and told anyone that asked that the store was out of commission for the night.

Then, I got someone that hadn't sung before. shift-command-f, find the song, right click, add new singer, freeze...video and audio unaffected, song finished, still couldn't do anything, force quit, restarted. Added the song to an existing singer. Luckily I only had one other new singer and I just pretended he was someone already in the system. Did nothing else all night to add new songs or singers, had no more issues.

Tried to send crash reports (I selected "later" since I was in the middle of the show) but I got an error each time I started kJams tonight, so I don't think they ever got sent. I don't have a show til next Friday, so I'm going to just leave things alone until Tuesday and see if I can't make it do some of this again and figure out what exactly is causing issues. If it's still doing it and I can recreate it I'll set up an appointment if you want during office hours.

Anyway, the show was still great, and the problems were surprising (because kJams has spoiled me, frankly) but only amounted to a minimal inconvenience overall. I wouldn't be surprised to find out there was some non-kJams thing behind it, given that none of the things that locked it up tonight have been issues with this version the last month or so. I'm using a different service to host my live internet show (this is only the second show with them) but other than that service (via safari) I'm only running kJams and iTunes.

I'm just wondering if you have a large library, after over 10 years in the business I have getting on for 90,000 songs and I know kjams is not overly helpful until it's finished doing its tasks on start up, if you dont let it finish I have found on occasion that it's gets very 'moody'. Not what you want when all eyes are staring at you, but I take it as a queue to trim my list (although I haven't gotten round to it yet)

my typical test library has been 40,000 songs. I have just recently got a 115k test library to work with.

still, can you reproduce it? If so, let's make an appointment and i can look at your screen. -dave

I can't reliably reproduce the big delays. Right now the only one I've been able to inconsistently reproduce is the one that happens sometimes when I click on the venue name and it presents the list of singers.

However, I am still getting an error when I try to send a crash report. That I can reproduce. This week has been a little busy at work and I had social functions Tues & Thurs, but I will schedule a time for next week. Say 7pm your time next Tuesday?

Will do...I left the setup alone after Saturday when I had some of the same delay issues. I'm hopeful that I can make them happen again.

OK, looks like I will have to wait until Thursday for Office Hours...I got dragged out of the office earlier than expected and probably won't get back to a phone tonight in enough time. I'll definitely try again on Thursday. Sorry.

*sigh* I'm a bad user. I missed Tuesday office hours, too. Fortunately, the update before today's seems to have made a huge difference in the issues I was having and I was able to get through all of Saturday's show, music purchases, new singers, and everything...without issues. Haven't been able to duplicate those situations bringing everything to a standstill. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)
