extracting tracks from non CD+G drives?

Post by golly »

Trying to help a computer illeterate KJ go with a Mac solution instead of PC and am very excited about kJams.

I read on another site that even if your CD drive does not support the CD+G format, that you can usually extract the tracks to your hard disc through a CD burning program. I'm sure the site was just talking about PCs, but can Roxio Toast extract the data files from a CD+G disc even if the drive itself doesn't support playback of the CD+G format?

(Sorry, since I'm not a KJ, I don't have any CD+G discs handy to try this out myself.)

CD+G Drive Compatability

Post by dave »

Unfortunately, on OS X, I have not written a custom driver (kernel extension) to access the hardware directly, I am relying on the IOKit provided by apple, which means I can only read CD+G discs using drives that support reading that format in hardware. Fortunately, it's a pretty broad range of hardware that is compatable.

Almost all desktop machines have compatable drives. For a list of drives, see:

the next FAQ describes my recommended drive.
