Saving song names

Post by Karanight »

If I edit the name of songs and singers, and then shut and reopen kJams the songs should retain the corrected names including any label colour, but it doesn't always. Is there a reason for this.

After re-opening, most of the editing is correct but not all of it, or at least not every-time I try this. After I've done any editing I've even saved the Database before shutting kJams down, but I still don't get the desired results.

If I then shut kJams, trash the library in the music folder, re-open kJams and the re-add the tracks, I would have thought the re-edited names (that remained renamed after reopening before trashing the library) would have still been re-named. It doesn't, so does that mean that when I re-edit names the information is kept in kJams and not in the file where the tracks came from
Hope this lot makes sense. More than one question I know, but answers are needed by a fanatical library rebuilder

do you have a "songs not renamed" playlist? if so, the ones in there could not be renamed for various reasons.

if not, it is some other bug. everything you expect to happen *should* happen. the unexpected things that are happening should NOT be happening. let me know.

Sorry, I should have said. There was one track in the songs not re-named playlist and I corrected it in the finder but but the problem persisted. I'll re-do it all and give a blow by blow account

that's the problem. if you renamed anything in the finder, that breaks kJams. the ONLY thing you should do in the Finder is unlock files and/or folders.
the rest you MUST fix inside of kJams, until the "Songs Not Renamed" list goes empty. if there's still something in the list, then there's still something wrong. click the link above about "for various reasons" to learn more.

O.K.
I quit kJams.
Then trashed the kJams Library
Re-opened kJams
Added tracks from a single parent folder, referencing them
Waited..........
Waited a bit more ( i'm inpatient)
Tracks all added and now waiting for Pull Meta Data to finish
After Activity window is finished did a search for Lulu
High-lighted two duplicated tracks
Then hit Edit/Trash Original Files
Confirmed Trash
Tracks gone from kJams
Coloured remaining tracks green
Cleared the search bar (not sure what it's called)
Selected 314 tracks whilst kJams was searched by album
Then searched by #
Hit Advanced/Reinterpret names
Selected L-T - R - S hit OK
Got Error Renaming Songs window hit ok
Got Bad ID3 Tags window
Hit cancel (There was 314 songs being reinterpreted)
Looked in Song's not Renamed 46 tracks
Hit File/Save Database
Closed kJams
Re-opened kJams
Got bad ID3 tags window, I canceled it
Got Renaming Songs window hit ok
Waited for activity window to finish
Looked in Song's not Renamed, now there's 33 tracks
Quit kJams
Trashed the library
Opened kJams
Added the same tracks as last time and referenced them
When Activity window finished
The tracks I'd colour labeled were still the same colour this time (they're often not the same colour after this exercise
Searched by album and noticed that the 314 were no longer edited but back to the same as they were at the very start!

P.S.Noticed your comment about not editing the track in finder, duh, I can be a fool at times, it's obvious really ain't it

Added tracks from a single parent folder, referencing them
good
After Activity window is finished did a search for Lulu
High-lighted two duplicated tracks
Then hit Edit/Trash Original Files
Confirmed Trash
Tracks gone from kJams
so you selected BOTH duplicates? don't you want to leave one behind?
Coloured remaining tracks green
do you mean you set their label color?
Cleared the search bar (not sure what it's called)
do you mean you clicked the "X" in the search box?
Selected 314 tracks
and you're absolutely sure that all 314 tracks had the same template / naming style? this is critical. if you don't know what i mean please say so
whilst kJams was searched by album
Then searched by #
when you say "Searched" do you really mean "sorted" ?
Hit Advanced/Reinterpret names
Selected L-T - R - S hit OK
do you know *exactly* why to pick that? can you say with confidence you really know how to use "reinterpret names" ?
again, it's critical that all the tracks you selected had the exact same template
Got Error Renaming Songs window hit ok
this indicates that not all tracks had the same template
Got Bad ID3 Tags [dialog] window
okay this means you'll have to re-encode those songs probably, to create proper ID3 tags
Hit cancel
on the dialog, okay, but this won't stop the other songs from being reinterpreted
There was 314 songs being reinterpreted
yep
Looked in Song's not Renamed 46 tracks
did they all have name / artist / album info? if not, then you selected songs that do NOT have matching templates
Hit File/Save Database
that doesn't do anything

at this point did you wait for all activities to complete?
Closed kJams
Re-opened kJams
Got bad ID3 tags window

kjams will attempt to rename the songs each time it starts, until it works. so you'll have to figure out what went wrong with them.
I canceled it
ok
Got Renaming Songs window hit ok
i do not know what you mean. what is the actual name or contents of the dialog?
Waited for activity window to finish
Looked in Song's not Renamed, now there's 33 tracks
this may happen if you didn't let all activities finish before you quit, above
Quit kJams
Trashed the library
oh. well. umm. we should keep working with the same library
Opened kJams
Added the same tracks as last time and referenced them
When Activity window finished
The tracks I'd colour labeled were still the same colour this time (they're often not the same colour after this exercise
you may be quitting before kjams has a chance to write stuff out (tho that should never happen)
older versions did NOT save label colors, but the current version does, you should no longer have it lose label color when you rebuild.
Searched by album and noticed that the 314 were no longer edited but back to the same as they were at the very start!
is it possible you don't have write access to the disk? what is the file system format of the disk on which the songs reside? (macos, ntfs, fat32 etc?)

There were three tracks so I deleted the two dups

Yes

Yes

When I rename any tracks I always choose tracks that look the same as each other and rename those and then I go back the do others in the same manner

I don't know why to choose L-T - R - S over for instance R - S - L-T except I choose the results the give what I'm wanting
dave wrote:

I must have inadvertently chosen a couple of tracks that didn't have the same template

Desperation

Yes. I've started to wait for about 30 seconds after the activities have completed

I'll have to wait till I get that again to let you know exactly what it said

Thought I did
dave wrote:

The reason I did this is I'm working to to get rid of dups and other tracks I don't want and I'm doing one make at a time and this time I'm just working with EK tracks. I've taken all the EK tracks and put all the files into one folder (I can't see the point of having lots of different catalogues from the same outfit)

I have unlocked all the files for kjams. The HD is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

I have to say that Dave came through on this as I thought he would, nice and pleasant to talk with and very patient.
The problem was a meta data misunderstanding on my part
A big thank you and 5 stars to you Dave

the problem was he preferred "A - S - L" format but had not chosen that in the tags preferences for conforming.
