seems like it's an iOS app that talks to it? kJams doesn't run on iOS. Do you know if there's a open SDK for computer-based apps?

yes, i know, the hardware. and what talks to the hardware is your phone, not your computer.

Update: apparently you can use the Chrome web browser to have that send your desktop picture to it.

Chromecast will not work. What you need is AirPlay display mirroring. There are now a number of devices that claim "AirPlay Mirroring" but that is used just for iOS, for sending content from a given app to a display. For use with a computer, such as a Mac, you need to mirror a secondary display, not just the output from an app (since kJams is not running in iOS). There are a few devices now that will do AirPlay display mirroring, but they are all rather expensive, especially when compared to the Apply TV.

(Also, the output from the Chromecast is kinda glitchy in the current release, anyway. NRFPT!)
