Unable to clear metadata fields

Adding a comment works fine. Changing the comment works fine. But deleting the contents of the comment field does not save to the metadata or mp3 tags. Same happens for any field edited. So if I want to clear the Genre field, I get the same behavior. Not sure if this is by design, because I think it happens when the mp3 tag data is edited externally, and pull meta data is used, then if the mp3 tag was empty then the library metadata is not updated. Can you confirm?
