Apple Mac compatibility DVD drives

Just talk about kJams stuff with each other, describe things you did that worked, talk about your setup, anything that doesn't fit into the other forums!

Apple Mac compatibility DVD drives

Post by martinpittaway »

I have A G5 Tower, a Mac Pro Tower, A 20" Intel iMac, a 17" Intel iMac and a G5 iMac and every time KJams tells me, in every case, that my drive is not compatible with the sunfly disk I'm trying to play. I'm at a loss.

Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D
Revision: AB09
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
This is the drive in the MacPro tower and still no good. Still reports wrong drive. Is it me or am I doing something wrong? I'm willing to buy this software so long as I can make it work.

is that the only disc?

have you tried other discs?

according to the FAQ:
http://www.kjams.com/wiki/FAQ#What_driv ... pported.3F
PIONEER sometimes don't work.

According to the spec sheet at:
http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/43/9 ... index.html

"CD-Text, Photo-CD (Single & Multiple Session), CD-DA, CD-Extra, CD-Text, Video CD, CD-R, CD-RW (including HS, US, US+)"

Note the conspicuous absence of "CD+G".

So I think not.

I recommend a Plextor

Hi. Thanks for the info. It just seems so odd that ALL my computers report the same error message. Is there a firmware fix or something?

no firmware fix

No, this is a hardware issue. Either the drive is physically capable of read/writing CD+G or it's not, the software drivers cannot compensate. If the spec sheet does not state "CD+G" then you're out of luck. :(

It does not strike me as odd at all that all your drives don't work. It's unfortunately rather a rare case in which a drive will support the format. Most users, i'd say the vast majority, must buy an external drive. (I recommend a Plextor 760A and a USB2 or FireWire adapter)

thanks for the warning. My friends are wanting to do karaoke for New Year's so I decided to look into Mac solutions. i was just looking for some info on the Mac Pro.

I need to check if the plextor in my old PC is CD+G worthy and if there is a way to connect it to the Mac.

I'm quite confident that all older Plextor models *can* read and write CD+G format, so yes i recommend going that route.

And it's perfectly reasonable to use an "internal" drive as an external drive, with the appropriate $12 adapter.
