Say you've ripped a song in AIF or WAV format, and you've decided you'd rather have it in MP3 or Ogg format. Or say you've imported a bunch of .bin files and you'd like them to be converted to MP3.

  1. Go to Edit → Preferences → Importing
  2. Set the encoder to your preferred format.
  3. Select the songs you want to convert.
  4. Now go to Advanced → Convert Selection to _____ (the format shown here is the one you just set under step #2).
  5. When you click on Convert Selection, your songs will be converted to the desired format.

If you want to keep the original format as well as convert to a new format, what you should do depends on where the song currently resides.

  • For songs you have ripped (that is, they live inside the "kJams Music" folder), simply duplicate the song before you convert its format. davequestion: Suggestions on location of duplicates?
  • For songs that you imported with Add To Library, you will first need to find out where that song lives. (Remember, when you add to the library, you aren't copying the music file.)
    1. Right click on the song.
    2. Select Reveal In [finder]…. This will show you where the original song lives.
    3. Convert the file format in kJams, following the instructions above.
    4. Then re-add the original back into kJams davequestion: Do you use Add to Library for this?
This can potentially cause cache confusion, because you've created a situation where two songs have exactly the same meta info. I recommend you change some meta info on one version of the song to be slightly different from the other: name, artist or album.

Important Note Converting songs is similar to ripping in that kJams will copy the song INTO the "kJams Music" folder, and kJams will then own the song. This is in contrast to the Add to Library function, which only makes a reference to the song. (In other words, kJams does not own the song). When you convert a song that is only referenced by kJams, kJams will copy the song into your "kJams Music" folder, in the new format, leaving the original untouched.
