Hi Dave, It's been a while since I bugged you and I've forgotten how to transfer files. I'm leaving my job where all files and account are stored on a Mac. I want to put everything on an imac that I purchased for the home. Isn't there a way certain files in the library (prefs) and user account can be copied on an external drive and pasted into the new machine? The only problem is that the user name of the computer has changed? What can I do to fix this. After the files are all moved over, they will be taken off the one at work.
Thanks, Tom

yes, see the article on cloning:

you'll also have to do the symbolic link trick from the old user name to the new user name:

let me know if you get stuck, please use email.

Um, or you can just reimport the songs into a new library and skip all that.
Re: Transfering from One Mac to another
right but then you lose your playlists, venues, singers and preferences.

Dave:
I am assuming that since the user is transferring the songs from a machine at a former job to his home machine, that the user is starting from scratch, with no venues, or other important playlists.

Re: Transfering from One Mac to another
sure, but as the user specifically asked to preserve prefs, that's where i steered the conversation.

Perhaps I read the wrong thing into "Isn't there a way certain files in the library (prefs) and user account can be copied on an external drive and pasted into the new machine? The only problem is that the user name of the computer has changed?"
Namely, perhaps I was being too Unixy and not enough kJamsy in my reading of the word "user".
